We welcome you to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church.
Pastor Sarah and the amazing staff, Session, and members of this Church hope that you will experience the sense of God's Spirit moving in the life of this congregation. We are always amazed at the many small and large ways that God continues to do a "new thing" in God's good creation, especially among the members of the body of the resurrected Christ.
To that end, we here at St. Andrew's continue to "cast the net" of the beloved Andrew, Jesus' first disciple, trying new ways of connecting with others in and around St. Andrew's Church. We continue to polish this website, knowing that many of you are reading this message for the first time, wanting to know who and whose we are. Who are we? We are daughters and sons of God. Whose are we? Members of God's beloved community. And as such, we hope you will join us in worship, in education, in fellowship, in service, and living out the Good News of God's love for all creation.
St. Andrew's is an inclusive community, with doors open to one and all. We welcome those who are wanting to challenge their faith and grow in new, deeper ways, and those who are just starting on the journey; people who are chronologically young with old souls, and those who are older with young hearts; those who are individuals happy with life as it is as well as those in partnered relationships or married; those who are straight and those who self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning (LGBTQ), those with many college degrees and those who are simply students of life; those with abilities and those who live a creatively challenging life and thrive on the new and different; those who proclaim Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior and those who wonder what it all means.
Come and be with us as we continue on this incredible pilgrimage of Christian faith.
Pastor Sarah is over the moon excited to be serving as Pastor of St. Andrew’s and living at long last in the Pacific Northwest. She first visited Portland (the southwest hills, in fact!) while a student at the College of Wooster in Wooster, OH and decided then and there that someday Portland would be her home. As of June 1, with the call to St. Andrew’s at last that desire has been realized. Sarah is a Presbyterian preacher’s kid who picked a Presbyterian college and was active in campus ministry all throughout her undergraduate years. Despite arriving at college vowing never to be a minister, by her junior year she discerned God calling her to do exactly that. She shared time in the L’Arche community in her hometown of Syracuse, NY for a year after college and then relocated to Chicago, IL to pursue her Masters of Divinity at McCormick Theological Seminary. While at McCormick, Sarah became clear that her call was to be a teacher in and for the church. In 2002 Sarah graduated from McCormick, was ordained to the ministry, and married her beloved Kevin, a fellow preacher’s kid alum from the College of Wooster. Sarah and Kevin served in ministry together in Lowville, New York (Sarah as solo pastor, Kevin as church musician) for six years until Sarah discerned a call to return to school in order to be better equipped for the teaching ministry to which she is called. Sarah and Kevin moved to Nashville, TN in order for Sarah to pursue a Ph.D. in Theological Studies at Vanderbilt University in 2008 with their long-desired daughter Caroline in Sarah’s womb. Sarah completed her Ph.D. after a year of teaching in Richmond, VA at Union Presbyterian Seminary and after returning to the parish as a Co-Pastor in Elkhart, IN. Sarah, Kevin, and Caroline love board games, exploring nature, and sharing great food with people and are very excited to become part of the St. Andrew’s family.
